Digestion expertise from a doctor who knows what it’s like

My journey into the practice of medicine began when conventional medicine was unable to help my digestive disorder. I explored many different treatment perspectives in my personal healing and now have a lot of tools in my belt. What ended up helping me the most was the gentlest approach, and I am glad to tell you that treatment doesn’t have to be as much of a struggle as the illness itself.

What sets me apart from other digestion specialists?

There is a lot of focus right now in medicine on what lives inside your digestive tract—your flora. There is a correlation with an imbalance in the flora with many digestive disorders. Most Naturopathic Doctors and Functional Medicine Doctors have a focus on treating digestive disorders by going after the flora imbalance. The standard treatment approach is based on killing bacteria by using either antibiotic medications or herbs used like antibiotics. This is followed by a restrictive diet for a period of time. The relapse rate is quite high, which makes me think we should be looking beyond the flora. My perspective is that, in most cases, your body should be able to balance the flora within on its own. I aim to help it do this using a more harmonizing approach to herbal medicine that avoids antibiotics and antibiotic-like herbs. Restrictive diets are also avoided as much as possible. If we keep treating microbes like we are at war with them, we will only create more problems down the road. I reserve the war-like approach as a last resort.

My approach can offer new ideas for those who have tried a “SIBO protocol” approach and either haven’t found it helpful, or have relapsed one too many times. I also provide a safer approach for patients with a history of an eating disorder.
